“Pretty soon now you’re gonna get a little older.”
Thanks, Bowie. Way to rub it in.
It’s not that we didn’t already know this was going to happen, it’s just that some of us choose to embrace it and others float in denial. I sometimes feel like I went to sleep when I was 21, and woke up 5 years later with a million miles logged and at least a thousand shows played, and that it happened overnight. It’s strange to think about myself as something other than a touring musician, but here I am, older and wiser. I’m still playing shows and writing music, but now there’s other work to be done as well.
Throughout my years dealing with labels, publicists, managers, promoters and just about every other industry person trying to syphon off my hard work, I realized that most of them are incredibly undeserving. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of you out there that work just as hard as the bands, and we are forever appreciative of what you do. But these are the suits content with the status quo, comfortable with going through the motions of the tried and true industry methods, floating in their denial of change. So let’s look at the reality of the industry: It is collapsing upon itself because it is resistant to altering its business model and to finding creative solutions.
I hope to dedicate this blog to exploring new and exciting happenings in music. I want to address problems and offer solutions, start dialogues, and expose talent and innovators. There’s so much to do and so much to say!
