If you haven’t picked up the new Tesla Boy record, Modern Thrills, you’re missing out on some of the best new old music around. I featured the band’s EP, Tesla Boy, on here awhile back and was eagerly anticipating this record. Thankfully the album delivers on the retro, synth-laden, nu-disco that I loved about their EP.

The video above is the band’s new single, “Thinking of You.” While, the video is relatively uninspired and, well, boring, the track is stellar. Buy their record(s) so they’ll come tour in the states already.

So I played a show with my band back in February down in Greensboro, NC. While it’s a town full of amazing people and amazing bands, not everyone knows that there are some amazing photographers taking incredible live photos of bands. CHIN CHIN - Stay

I’m not really one for the whole retro motown/funk/soul explosion thing. It usually doesn’t click with me. But after catching Chin Chin in their opening slot supporting Dam Funk this past weekend, I was forced to reconsider my position. Perhaps it was the excessive amount of air humping by Chin Chin frontman Wilder Zoby, or maybe the dance floor humping of a few ecstasy-ridden teenagers; but I suddenly found myself in the middle of an incredibly entertaining, if oversexed, party. Let the good times roll.

The Rocketboys - Islands

These guys opened for my band a handful of times, while we were touring through Texas. I always remembered them because of their live precision, which I found quite impressive. Not only were they tight, but they had a real knack for melody and such control over their instruments. They were a breath of fresh air compared to the local openers we’d run across on a daily basis.

Anyway, they’ve recently released a new album, 20,000 Ghosts, which is full of melodramatic indie pop akin to bands like Eisley, Deas Vail, or Lydia. Is it totally original? No. But they do it better than the rest, and without a label to boot. If you like it, pick up the record or check out their shows. I’ve got a real soft spot for the DIY road warrior types.

WAX FANG - The Doctor Will See You Now

There is something just so grandiose and epic about Wax Fang that sets them apart from their peers. It might be their cerebral lyrics, dynamic instrumentation, or the fact that they do an incredible job of making you forget they’re just a trio. Whatever it is, it’s earning the band accolades and achievements that most artists only dream of.

Like what? How about being hand picked by Pavement, one of the most influential bands of all time, to play at the festival they’re curating. Or how about being invited to open tours for My Morning Jacket and Spoon? Yeah, pretty significant. The band was also recently picked up by San Francisco label, Absolutely Kosher, to rerelease their most recent album, La La Land.

Though the band evokes heroes like Bowie or The Pixies, they also fit comfortably with updated acts like Local Natives of The Wrens. And if the awesomeness of their music and high profile supporters aren’t enough to sway you, the band just covered Purple Rain (the album) in its entirety this past weekend in their hometown of Louisville, KY. Yeah, they’re THAT good. Footage from the show hasn’t made its way online yet, but I did find this video from last week of the band covering Purple Rain (the song).

Oh and the drummer used to be in one of my favorite bands, Elliott!

TWIN SISTER - All Around and Away We Go

Ok, so maybe I’m a little late on this one. I’ve seen this band hyped a bunch, but they are from the area, so maybe they’re not relatively unknown outside of here after all. Or who really cares?

The point is, “All Around and Away We Go,” is a breezy disco gem. It makes me picture everything in one of those 1970s soft-filtered, disco-balled videos, where the vocalist has one of those long, skinny, microphones and there’s lots of afros and roller skates.

It also makes me think of Blondie.

Oh and the band is wrapping up a handful of dates with Xiu Xiu, and they’re opening for The Morning Benders in a few days, so I guess that means they’ll probably be a hot hipster ticket before too long, so get it while you can!
