MiniBoone is a five piece indie rock band from Brookl-WAIT! Stop right there. You’ve heard this shit before, right? Yes, there are a LOT of indie rock bands from Brooklyn, but not like this. This one is good. This one is unpretentious. This one isn’t riding the coattails of DFA or Grizzly Bear (not that there’s anything wrong with that). This one is different because they rock like a rock band should, while managing to bring the party AND keep it interesting for all of us nerdy music kids out there.
“Devil In Your Eyes” is the exemplary MiniBoone track: a tight rhythm section, dynamic harmonies, and lyrics that would make David Byrne smile with approval. The band’s new EP Big Changes, comes out January 26th (that’s TOMORROW kids!) via online retailers. Until then, listen to more music on the band’s myspace and check out one of their high energy live shows.
On a personal note, I like MiniBoone so much that I decided to work with the band on the press side. Dude, isn’t that like, a conflict of interest or something? Who cares? It’s my blog and I do what I want!
I first heard Home Video towards the end of 2008. At that point the band had been around for nearly 6 years, had a few EPs released on Warp Records and a full length on Defend Music. Despite calling Brooklyn home and having an impressive back catalog, I’d never heard of them, and the only person I knew who had was my girlfriend, the person that introduced them to me. While their anonymity is a mystery to me, I decided to do my part to spread the gospel when I saw they released a new EP, It Will Be OK, in early 2009.
Tracks like, “Every Love That Ever Was” and “I Can Make You Feel It,” are simultaneously melancholy and triumphant. Full of looping synths, twinkling arpeggios, lush melodies, and subdued vocals, Home Video creates not so much songs, but rather soundtracks to the moments in life that you remember forever.
Home Video is the project of Louisiana transplants Collin Ruffino and David Gross, who develop their dark, dense, moody creations with the help of their touring drummer, Jim Orso . The group has supported acts as diverse as Blonde Redhead, Justice, Pinback, and Flying Lotus, and are currently working on a new album.
Has it been a week already? Hopefully you all had a great holiday like I did. It was nice to close my laptop and relax in the warm southern weather for a minute. But as with all good things, the Thanksgiving holiday is over and it’s back to the grind.
Although it’s starting to get brisk here in New Jersey, I’ve been keeping warm with the sunny dance pop of Barcelona’s Delorean. Their newest EP, Ayrton Senna, is a flawless batch of upbeat, dreamy, disco-laden fun that hasn’t left my music rotation in months. Tracks like “Deli” and “Seasun” conjure memories of carefree optimism, packaged in an indefatigable cool, and sophisticated suaveness. Having already made some noise online by remixing groups likeFranz Ferdinand,The XX, and The Teenagers, Delorean has garnered early support from Fader, Pitchfork Media, and NME. With a new album planned for 2010, the band will hopefully bring the party stateside. Until then, sit back and close your eyes, and let Delorean take you someplace warm.
There’s something incredibly moving about Sigh No More, the newest release from London’s Mumford and Sons. Perhaps it’s the naturally gritty vocal delivery of singer Marcus Mumford. Maybe it’s the dark, lush melodies and the rich lyrical storytelling. Or is it the folky textures and multi-part harmonies? Whatever the case may be, Sigh No More is a mesmerizing record, full of romanticism and geniality.
Formed in December of 2007, Mumford and Sons quickly rose to prominence in the London folk scene, and has since captured the ears of listeners around the world. While the band enjoys success abroad, they’re relatively unknown in the states. With the release of Sigh No More this is sure to change, as the record is destined for “Best Of 2009” lists everywhere, including mine.
I’ve been through the ringer of the music industry and it’s a hell of a place. After spending close to a decade bouncing around from label to label, publicist to publicist, and tour to tour, I formed Get Fresh USA to provide a new, unique, more effective approach to public relations and consulting.
I love music, traveling, and all things culinary. And I want to meet you.
