SLEIGH BELLS - A/B Machines

NEW MUSIC MONDAYS: Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells have been making waves as one of the most hyped new bands to turn heads at CMJ. With recent features on Pitchfork and Stereogum (and other notable press outlets) it’s just a matter of time until this Brooklyn duo really catches on.

Part of what makes Sleigh Bells so unique is the collision of their musical backgrounds, which could be described as polar opposites. Guitarist/beat maker Derek Miller played in Florida hardcore outfit Poison the Well, while vocalist Alexis Krauss sang in teen pop group RubyBlue. The result is a crunchy electropop sensation with all the heaviness of Miller’s past, Krauss’s ability to be sweet or snarling, and a whole lot of swagger. Think M.I.A. meets The Kills, with a pop twist.

With only a handful of demos floating around the net, the band’s broad stylistic range is evident. Whether it’s the club bumping party of “A/B Machines” or the summery pop of “Ring Ring,” the band shows lots of promise, and their full length is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated of 2010.
