MUMFORD AND SONS - White Blank Page

There’s something incredibly moving about Sigh No More, the newest release from London’s Mumford and Sons. Perhaps it’s the naturally gritty vocal delivery of singer Marcus Mumford. Maybe it’s the dark, lush melodies and the rich lyrical storytelling. Or is it the folky textures and multi-part harmonies? Whatever the case may be, Sigh No More is a mesmerizing record, full of romanticism and geniality.
Formed in December of 2007, Mumford and Sons quickly rose to prominence in the London folk scene, and has since captured the ears of listeners around the world. While the band enjoys success abroad, they’re relatively unknown in the states. With the release of Sigh No More this is sure to change, as the record is destined for “Best Of 2009” lists everywhere, including mine.
For fans of Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens.

Surfer Blood - Swim

(Surfer Blood @ Brooklyn Bowl, 11/13/09)
Surfer Blood is another of this year’s CMJ breakouts. While the band looks like they’re barely of legal drinking age, these West Palm Beach, FL natives have created a hook-laden indie pop record that belies their years. The new album, Astro Coast, bring to mind the melodic simplicity of Vampire Weekend and the nerdy anthemic garage pop of Weezer’s Blue Album.
With lots of attention from press like Pitchfork Media, Fader, and Spin, the band is sure to turn more heads once Astro Coast hits retailers in 2010.

NEW MUSIC MONDAYS: Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells have been making waves as one of the most hyped new bands to turn heads at CMJ. With recent features on Pitchfork and Stereogum (and other notable press outlets) it’s just a matter of time until this Brooklyn duo really catches on.
Part of what makes Sleigh Bells so unique is the collision of their musical backgrounds, which could be described as polar opposites. Guitarist/beat maker Derek Miller played in Florida hardcore outfit Poison the Well, while vocalist Alexis Krauss sang in teen pop group RubyBlue. The result is a crunchy electropop sensation with all the heaviness of Miller’s past, Krauss’s ability to be sweet or snarling, and a whole lot of swagger. Think M.I.A. meets The Kills, with a pop twist.
With only a handful of demos floating around the net, the band’s broad stylistic range is evident. Whether it’s the club bumping party of “A/B Machines” or the summery pop of “Ring Ring,” the band shows lots of promise, and their full length is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated of 2010.
