I didn’t like The Bloodsugars when I first heard them. I’m not sure why exactly, but it rubbed me the wrong way; like it was trying too hard to emulate its heroes. Eventually, I pulled my head out of my ass and succumbed the relentlessly hooky material on the band’s newest record, I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On.
The album opener, “Light At The End of the Tunnel,” is hands down one of the best pop songs I’ve heard in the last year, thanks mostly to its infectious vocal melody and the soft delivery of singer, Jason Rabinowitz. Despite my initial impressions, it now feels smart and original to me, while drawing lightly from artists like Peter Gabriel and Prince.
Tiger City! Four dudes churning out 80s inspired, danceable, soft rock. Sure it’s nothing new and sure it’s uber hip right now, but these guys are some of the best. Combining all the smoothest moments of Alphabetical era Phoenix, with the funk of Prince and the relative chill of Neon Indian, Tiger City brings the party.
While the band has already made buzz on the blogs and even hopped the pond a few times for overseas tours, their popularity in the States is just getting started. Front man and resident beard master, Bill Gillim carries the songs with his relaxed delivery and crystal clear falsetto. Having already played with artists like M.I.A. and Neon Indian, Tiger City is certainly in the running to be the next big thing.
Tiger City’s full length debut, Ancient Lover, is available via online retailers now.
I used to have an agenda with this blog, but things change. I'm just a dude that spent a decade touring in a semi-successful band, and I know a lot about music and the industry. I write about what I love, what inspires me, or anything that other people and musicians might find useful. My name is Alex.
I love music, traveling, and all things culinary. And I want to meet you.
